How To Make A Clean Burning Candle at Home

When I think about this time of year and the Winter solstice, think a lot about how light plays such a role on our state of mind.  I live in the South East but I have family up North.  I know how much light affects the mood.  In fact, there is a name for the depressive feeling people can experience in the Winter months…. Seasonal effective disorder (SAD)

I’m sure by now your thinking,  I thought this was a blog about How-to make your own candles?  It totally is, just hang with me while I connect the dots.  Winter Solstice and candle light go way back and are still used has a metaphoric balm for the Winter blues.

Hygge and Lighting

If your not familiar with the term Hygge let me give you a brief summary.   “hygge,” pronounced hoo-guh – a Danish term defined as “a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.”

List of Cosy Must Haves

    • Lots of candles
    • Thick warm soaks
    • Quality chocolate
    • Making crafts
    • Warm Beverages
    • Lots of time lazing around the fireplace

These are a few of the Scandinavian antidotes to the common Winter blues.  You can read the book,  The Little Book of Hygge for a full run down and better understanding of this cultural concept.

As someone that makes candles for my wellness spa, I understand all the math (yes math!), sourcing, and trial and error that goes into making a non-toxic, sustainable, clean burning candles.  It’s A Lot and can be frustrating.

That is why I’m obsessed with Sibling Candles.  They have thought of everything!  Truly, everything in one compostable package.  It is all gathered for you with the proper measurements and quality sourced ingredients.

My favourite part about this semi-homemade candle kit is that you can reuse your pretty or unique candle vessels.  I’m sure you, like me, you may have repurposed many candle containers for makeup brush holders, succulent pot, and catchall container.  Now, it can be your favorite candle again!

If you don’t have a vessel in mind, Siblings has some beautiful options for you

There are a few parameters to keep in mind, like the diameter of the vessel and the material it’s made of.  But the folks at Sib-lings have everything mapped out for you. They even put together a fragrance quiz to help you find your perfect match. When I tell you it’s user friendly, I’m not kidding.  They have a step by step guide with photos, as well as video directions.

I also have a video on my youtube in which I do an unboxing and step by step tutorial of my first impressions.  Give it a watch and you’ll see how family friendly it is.

I’m wishing all of you a happy and health filled Winter Solstice.  Make sure you keep it cosy (the hygge spelling)  with candles and sip a heathy, good for you cup of cocoa.

    Hyg dig ! ( a hygge goodbye )
